DataCenter Buzzword Bingo

I recently finished an exercise defining the technical standards for one of Europe’s largest managed service providers. As part of the exercise I gathered the key capabilities across the various infrastructure silos across the Data-centre.

I found that it was a trawl to separate the facts from the fiction in the vendor marketing. I have gathered the  buzzwords which may be useful for others to compare (and add to please) as they I think provide a useful architectural checklist.

  • Storage Thin Provisioning
  • Storage De-Duplication
  • Storage Virtualisation
  • Fully Automated Storage Tearing (FAST)
  • iSCSI connectivity
  • Virtual Tape Library
  • Continuous Data Protection
  • Application Acceleration
  • Core and Edge Switching
  • Microsoft Direct Access and NAP
  • SSL VPN
  • VDI
  • Resilient Switch stacking
  • Bandwidth packet policing and shaping
  • WAN traffic deduplication
  • Unified communications
  • IPv6
  • Remote Desktop Service
